Achieving Flexibility & Dramatic Cost Reduction through EDI Conversion

Industry: Manufacturing
Type of Solution: Enterprise Application Integration, EDI conversion to XML/HTTP

The Challenge

A leading provider of personal products decided to replace a home-grown ERP application with PeopleSoft Enterprise One, and in the process develop a SOA strategy for internal integration.

Existing enterprise wide integration was point-to-point and proprietary. The client wished to migrate from existing legacy EDI value-added network (VAN) environment and move to UCCNet support and Electronic Data Interchange Internet (EDIINT) AS2 standard, in order to sustain the ever-changing requirements of their retail merchants.

While this was smart strategy, the goal of concurrently upgrading the EDI environment exponentially increased the complexity of the overall effort.

Our Approach

  • Analyzed the integration problem both from an internal integration perspective and from an EDI-centric view and proposed a high-level architecture that would create an enterprise level, SOA "layer" where various business groups could expose their functionality and be able to consume others
  • Worked with the customer to design, develop and test the solution
  • Created an EDI framework that served as a basis for all present and future EDI transactions
  • Mentored client resources on the integration technology and new solution to the extent they were fully comfortable and capable of managing the solution

The Outcome

  • Eliminate VAN costs
  • Eliminate operating costs for EDI infrastructure
  • Eliminate hardware and software costs for legacy EDI software & Mainframe MIPs
  • Increased flexibility from real-time processing, while continuing traditional batch processing
